The Art of Sacred Oriental Belly Dance

The Art of Sacred Oriental Belly Dance

As the flow of a river draws its strength from its source, so Belly-Dancing, finds its source in the belly. The whole body swings around this centre, the navel of the world. By moving the torso, belly, hips and pelvis, women come in touch with the vitality and the life centres in their body. These movements help us to develop the feminine art of listening & the creative quality of receptiveness.

Through the various rhythms, the women embark on an inner journey that enables them to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and experience a healing process.

The movements of Belly Dancing initiate a symbolic relationship to life and to our deeper nature, which can teach us about the wisdom of our soul.

Come & experience joy and aesthetic dancing combined with  a spiritual way of experiencing yourself.

*This Workshop is only for Women.

The Meditative Art of Calligraphy - An introductory Workshop

The Meditative Art of Calligraphy
 An Introductory Workshop

unnamed

About Calligraphy
Calligraphy goes beyond beautiful handwriting; it is meditation-in-movement where the mind, body and soul come together in unison.

The process of creating a piece of calligraphy is like an experience of ‘celestial dance’ on paper… where you dip the bamboo pen in the inkpot, pause to take a deep breath and then put all your concentration on creating a visual masterpiece. It requires the discipline of focusing all one’s attention to each stroke. In today's fast paced life,  Calligraphy is an  art of being centered in the Here-and-Now.

In the introductary workshop, Aiyana will guide us, step-by-step, in the discipline and rhythm of creating the fundamental calligraphy strokes, using the treasure tools of calligraphy – the oblique nib reed pen, ink and paper. The workshop will be followed by the screening of a film on calligraphy- Tears of Dancing Letters.
Facilitator's Bio
Aiyana
Aiyana is a self-taught artist. She pursued her passions under the guidance of her gurus – Shobha Broota (Painting), Anis Siddiqui (Calligraphy) and Subrata De (Sitar). She has been practicing calligraphy for more than a decade. Aiyana explores the deeper perspective of life through her creative work. Her exploration in the spiritual dimension and abstract expression of the calligraphy letters took a distinct direction. She has taken the ancient traditional form of calligraphy into the universal language of contemporary abstract art.

Moving Breath Workshop

Moving Breath is an intense personal process in which the body  is sensitized in a harmonious and holistic way through a combined experience of yoga, dance and voice.

The simple functional and mechanical act of breathing becomes transformed into a vital, dynamic and creative experience, sharpening the consciousness of the “self” and unfolding the energetic breath-body.

From breath movement arises, movement becomes stillness, silence into sound, sound returns into movement.

“Then energy is no longer separate from the essence of the one possessing it. There is eternally identification of the two, like that of fire and it’s power to burn.”

Of Indo/Celt origin, Sheila has had the privilege of working closely with great teachers in the creative arts from East and West (dance, music, theatre) and also with spiritual masters in the field of Yoga and Tibetan and Zen Buddhism. These encounters enabled her to define and her teaching methods in the system of Moving Breath, which brings together both traditional and contemporary creative techniques in yoga, voice, rhythm and dance.

Sheila was the first Indian to succeed as a contemporary dancer in the West. She founded the Chakra Centre for East West Synthesis in Southern France in 1984 where she trained teachers in the Moving breath system. Since closing down the Centre in 2002, she has been applying the Moving Breath techniques to different fields like Education, Performing Arts and also Healing.

Sweat Lodge: A Purification Ceremony

Sweat Lodge
A Purification Ceremony

sweat-lodge

A sweatlodge is a purification ceremony - designed using all 5 elements:
Earth, Fire, Air, Water & your own Spirit as the 5th. A sacred fire
representing illumination and wisdom is used to heat stones from the earth
until they are red hot (passing this energy and light into them). These
stones are then taken through a doorway into a womb like structure called a
sweatlodge and placed in the hollowed out center on the earth by a
designated person - the fire-keeper. In this lodge pariticpants sit around
these stones on the earth and in connection to the earth with the intention
to purify. The door is then closed, making it pitch black inside and water
is poured on the stones to create steam and sweat. Prayers are asked
for different aspects of ourselves and our environment, drumming may raise
the energy and songs are sung until the door is opened once more at the end
of a round.

There are 4 rounds of the sweat, each representing a direction and aspect of
ourselves using a Native American psychology of a medicine wheel. The
intention is to not only to physically cleanse through sweating but also
emotionally, mentally and spiritually as we surrender ourselves to the
elements and the process of recognizing the importance of respect for all
creation in our actions.

Through this ceremony you may expect to find a deeper appreciation and
connection to yourself and the nature around you, find a sense of connection
and tribe with the others who participate, enjoy songs, learn something
about native cultures and psychology from where this ceremony originates and
importantly have fun while doing so!

At the end of the ceremony you are invited to lay down on the earth, drink
plenty of water, enjoy a shower and then join us for lunch. Note: please have
only a light breakfast beforehand and bring a towel for after. Participants
can be in swimwear or cover themselves with a sarong in the lodge but heavy
clothes are not worn.
