A Musical Evening With Baul Mystics
Subversive, seductive, exuberant, cheerful… the music of the Bauls touches the very core of our hearts, bringing out waves of happiness and bliss! The songs of these wandering minstrels from Bengal are infused with parables and philosophical meaning. It overflows with infectious joy and is rapt with tantric spiritual teachings on breath, asceticism, sex, philosophy and devotion.
“Baul” in Bengali means “mad” or “possessed”, and their music is a celebration of ‘holy madness,’ and rejection of traditional norms, that transforms the mood of the entire gathering into one of merriment.
Along with lead singers Jaydeb Das and Sanjeeb Das (dotara & ektara/lead singer), the group also includes Madhu Sudan and Jayanti (singers), Dhiren Das (tabla), Kani Lal Das (harmonium), Anada Lahiri (ghungru), Bharat Das (percussion).
