About the Facilitators
Joshua Sailo began his professional training at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, where he was introduced to contact improvisation, and was immediately encapsulated with the idea of sharing weight and "flying". He began his personal exploration and investigation in contact improv with Vanessa Brazeau, and together have performed and taught contact improv to a range of age groups in various cities. Sailo was fortunate to work and train with the founders of Kaeja D'dance, Allen and Karen Kaeja in Canada, where he was introduced to kaeja elevations, and has gone on to participate in a residency exploring concepts of contact improv under the direction of Erica Kauffman.
Sailo's contact improv class begins with personal investigations, taking the body from the floor to standing, to build self-awareness and tune into our breathing. The class then focuses on building trust through a series of exercises that later allow greater risk taking and being present and attuned to multiple stimulus created through dancing. Drawing on the influences of his contemporary dance training, floorwork, and working closely with Heidi Vierthaler in Streamflow Method, Sailo aims to introduce movement in a safe way and in proper alignment to release the body as well strengthen, while developing a range of dynamics and textures to bring a heightened state of awareness to ourselves and our surroundings.
We will then open the space to a journey in Improvisation jam, accompanied by live music in the background. Meet our self and others in movement, communicate and co-create through our bodies and individual expressions. Awareness, listening, playfulness, curiosity and creativity will be our guides.
